Fantastic and Important Exploration of Cultivating Allies from the Most Privileged Youth

Katy Swalwell is a rising superstar in the world of social justice and critical education. Her writing is accessible and direct, with engaging bits of narrative and poignant bits of analysis. Many people have written about the challenges of using critical pedagogies and social justice education approaches in privileged contexts. What sets this author apart is that she has spent time in the contexts about which she's writing. So she has firsthand experience as well as the impressive research that informed this book. If you want to understand why youth from privileged backgrounds respond the ways they do--varied, fascinating, complex ways--to attempts to engage them in social justice learning and some strategies for engaging privileged youth effectively, whether you work in an elite private school or a mixed-class public school, this is the book for you. On top of that, it's an enjoyable, engaging read.

Katy Swalwell provides a compelling case for why social justice education must consider the education of privileged children. She offers readers a useful overview of what privilege is and who is considered privileged, looking at both race and social class. The field of social justice education often focuses on pedagogical implications for marginalized youth; however, Katy Swalwell expands the conversation to include privileged youth, filling a crucial gap in the literature. The presentation of her findings is extremely well-written and vivid. Readers not only get to know Vernon Sloan and Liz Johnson's students, but they also get practical, real-world advice on how to incorporate social justice into their practice. Educating Activist Allies is a must-read for educators interested in social justice.
