some misinformation

Misinformation particularly with respect to the supplementation of Iodine. Other so called guidelines in here are from the bureaucracy of medicine rather than what is necessary to achieve optimum health.

Very Useful

A very useful chart which compiles information from many sources into one neat package. That said, one must do additional reading to confirm any suggestions about using Vitamins and Herbs to treat a health related problem, as opinions in this area do vary.

Although AMA medicine is not especially good at correcting many health problems, they are fairly good at diagnosing them. So my recommendation is to go to your GP or other AMA specialist to understand the problem you are have before trying to fix it yourself.

Then try some Vitamin therapy along with or instead of drugs. The more serious your problem, the more carefully you should make this decision and always read as much as you can about your particular health condition and how the Vitamins and Herbs function in the body. Being informed, is one of the best ways to stay healthy. In some cases, the drugs actually do work effectively.

Bottom line is this chart is definitely worth the five bucks they are asking for it.

Very nice guide and has a lot of useful information on it as a quick, go to reference. A lot of stuff that I never knew and I got these cause my family has been suffering a lot of skin and allergy issues so we have decided to cut out the chemicals and other things that aren't natural to try and better our health. These guides are handy to have as a quick guide, I reference them all the time. Would recommend to anyone who needs something quick to reference.

This book was highly recommended by many people so I was excited to get it. However I was extremely disappointed with the unsafe suggestions and practices. It is brand specific as well so won't be useful to those that use other essential oils. I definitely tell people to pass on this one, there are a ton of great books out there that provide safe information.

I use this book for everything essential oil related! Its my number one go to product when looking for an oil to be able to use safely in my children.
The layout is fantastic and it's well organized.
More than a reference guide, it gives helpful information such as oils to avoid for children. Some essential oils aren't safe nor recommended for pregnant women, so it goes through all of that as well.
They break it down based on who you're using the oils for. Babies, which are referenced as one day old all the way to 2 years old, toddlers and young kids(2-5years old), and then other children 5 and above.
It also explains what essential oils are and how to use them. How to benefit from them, how to store them.
It really is a must have for all moms of young ones and mothers to be that are essential oils users! Totally recommend this book!

Not as comprehensive and thorough as I'd like, but it's a good resource for parents like me who are looking for natural remedies for kids, especially the really young ones. Whenever my doctor prescribes a drug for my sick child, I consult this book first and see if there are natural alternatives that can get the job done as effectively.

Past, Present and Future

I learned a few new things from this book and enjoyed it overall. However I did find it a bit 'long-winded' and somewhat repetetiive, so if you're new to the subject and looking for an introduction, you'd be better off finding something more concise. The use of Indian
English leads to plenty of non-standard use of verbs and prepositions that could annoy some readers of this long book. The subject
was enough to keep me reading and enjoying.

A good book for those who desire to know more about Past life regression therapy. The book has chapters in detail about Past lives experienced by character called Dev.. Understanding n Diagnosing the root cause of trauma in one's present life from past lives ' and learning from the soul lessons involved is comprehensively written in the book. The book also dissolves unnecessary fears about digging one's past life though it is recommended to see a therapist or attend a workshop.. The steps for rescripting and reframing the trauma lived by the soul are necessary n easy to understand n follow. Reframing or rescripting is crucial for not absorbing the sadness from the past lives as they don't exist in real anymore in present lifetime. This book is an answer to recurring questions or struggles in this lifetime. "The why me syndrome" gets dissolved once the understanding of present life situations happens through past life therapy.

printing issues may turn you off

a good book with SERIOUS printing issues

this edition has photos that are stuck together and bound at the top of the pages... the picture captions are cut off mid-sentence.
the photographs are set incorrectly and haphazardly situated on the pages..
yet, I will keep the book as it is informative and I do not rely on photos of fungi alone.

This an amazing book. To begin with, it is about 1 and a half inches thick. It is a stay at home book. If you want a take on the fly book with glossy pictures and simple reading, this is NOT the book to buy. You can basically pick and chose the mushrooms you are interested in and find out everything good and bad about them. I have never seen a book on mushrooms with the depth of field that the author presents in his book.
Again, it is not a quick reference book for camping or trail walking. It is a serious look at mushrooms. The ones that you can safely eat, and the ones that will kill you quickly.
If you paired this with a quick reference book and stuck with 4-5 mushrooms you could safely identify, you would be well on your way to enjoying the hunt !

Unbelievably comprehensive.

An amazing book - I can't fathom the breadth and depth of the author's knowledge. Be warned, however, that this kind of comprehensiveness comes at a price. The fact that it contains so many different mushrooms from all over the US makes it more difficult for a beginner to identify the common ones in my area. For many beginners, a more local guide to just the more common shrooms might make more sense (AND be more portable - this thing is huge). For the serious mushroom hunter though, this is the bible.

This is a very significant Jewish Code

This series translates Maimonides' brilliant law code in a very readable fashion.

Maimonides' Mishneh Torah, his code of Jewish law, is exceptionally well organized and rational, but Judaism opted to seek the laws in the later codes of the Tur and the Shulchan Arukh and the codes that were built on their ideas. Why?

The problem with Maimonides' code was that it was rational. The Jews, like the majority of people of other faiths around them, wanted a code of law that addressed the world as they saw it, a world filled with demons and superstitious fears, with magic and practices that protected them from both. While Maimonides' code ignored these superstitions, the Tur and Shulchan Arukh and other codes abound in them from beginning to end. They taught the Jew how to evade and beat and control demons, which they believed appeared and bothered them daily.

For example, the Tur and Shulchan Arukh and other codes instruct the Jew to wash his hands three times each morning when he awakens. He is told to wash over a bowl and later pour it out outside his home. Why?

These codes drew this superstitious idea from the thirteenth century mystical book Zohar, which stated that the washing rids a person's body of the demons that attached themselves to his hands at night. The number three was chosen because it had mystical significance. Many Jewish practices based on mysticism are done three times; three assures success. Thus some Jews sing Shalom Aleikheim three times each Friday night.

At the time when these codes were written, when there were no sinks to collect water and drain it from the home, water was generally poured directly on the ground. Why, then, did these non-Maimonidean codes require that the hands be washed over a bowl that collected the water rather than letting it flow to the ground? If the demon-infected water were allowed to collect on the Jew's floor, demons would be able to escape from the water and reinfect the home with their evil deeds. Thus it was necessary to remove the water from the house.

Needless to say, several other reasons were given to explain the hand-washing practice. One, for example, it that the Jew prepares himself at the outset of the day to serve God, just as the priests washed before they served God in the Temple. This is an obvious later rationalization and not the true reason for the institution of the rite. The rationalization fails to explain the details such as the need for three washings and the bowl. Furthermore, the ceremonies are not at all similar; for example, the priests also washed their feet.

Maimonides' Code does not include such practices.

This series translates Maimonides' great code and has many very useful explanatory notes. It is helpful for people who are unable to read the original Hebrew; however readers may feel that the translation does not always capture Maimonides' rational approach and that the notes have non-rational ideas.

CAN GET AT LIBRARY

The set of books giving an English-Hebrew version of M-Torah is costly. If you have the money, fine. I read it at an University library.

I would like to have a set, but the price is just too high.

I highly recommend M-Torah as an introduction to Judaism, not the philosophy of RAMBAM, which often contradicts the TANACH. Maimonides as a thinker in his own right is very interesting; his ideas are the closest to modernism in scientific thinking prior to the period around Descartes. He and Spinoza should be read with TANACH, in particular the Torah. (Books of Moses)

An excellent textbook on discrete mathematics

As the authors explain, discrete mathematics is supposed to be mathematics that uses only arithmetic and algebra but does not involve calculus. That gives the authors plenty of flexibility in choosing their topics. And I'll concede that the material on "propositional calculus" in Chapter Five does not involve "calculus." You can understand this book without having gone past high school algebra.

These authors have the right idea when they say "an undergraduate mathematics textbook should teach the student to solve problems." This text sure does! And they even advise their students to start by trying the homework problems before reading the text and read it only when they get stuck! Of course, I think many students do that in the first place.

A very good feature of this text is that it has over 600 figures and tables. We see Venn diagrams, Hasse diagrams, tree diagrams, graphs, flowcharts, state diagrams, and much more.

I liked the part on graph theory, including the "Hungarian Algorithm" to solve the matching problem. And there is a good chapter on Boolean Algebra, and the use of Karnaugh maps. After that is an excellent section on finite state machines and Turing machines, which is followed by a chapter on formal languages. And there's plenty about mathemtical games. The whole book is enjoyable, and I think it would be plenty of fun to teach from it or learn from it.

Exhausting textbook.

I used this book for the course "Computer Science 202a: Mathematical Tools for Computer Science," at Yale University in the fall semester of 1991 - 92, which I audited. This was a required course in mathematical foundations for the computer science major.

I didn't like this book. While extremely thorough, it goes to an extreme. Some of the exercises, especially in the chapter on Discrete Probability Theory, were extremely long-winded, and took many hours and pages to solve. My writing hand eventually got tired from writing page after page after page for some of the exercises, and I once wound up with a severe headache during that course. While this textbook definitely teaches the student to "solve problems," it does so by exhausting the student.

The problem with the book's approach of urging students to "start by trying the homework problems before reading the text, and read it only when they get stuck" is that this approach does not help to build self-confidence for students who do not already have a flair for this material, yet the textbook is used in introductory courses for non-mathematics (e.g., computer science) majors. At this level, many students who many be proficient in other topics (e.g., programming) may just be getting their feet wet in this material.

It does not make sense to use this approach to help build self-confidence in an introductory discrete mathematics course for non-mathematics majors. My professor once conducted an in-class poll of how much time the students were spending on each weekly homework assignment using this textbook, and the average was about twenty hours. (This finding caused the professor to revise the homework policy from long problem sets to weekly examinations [which was even worse for students with examination phobia].)

My view is that many of the problems could have been designed to take less time each, while preserving the required ingenuity. There were simply too many steps required to complete many of the problems. In my opinion, this aspect was especially true of the chapter on Discrete Probability Theory.

The chapter on Graph Theory was fun, though, and the Venn diagrams were lucid. Also, the chapter on Propositional Calculus was relatively reasonable in difficulty, as well as being interesting. The chapters on Number Theory and Mathematical Games were interesting as well.

In particular, I felt that the chapter on Mathematical Games, which was independent of the other chapters, should have been placed earlier. That chapter, unlike some of the others, was relatively light and interesting, and would have helped to build self-confidence for students before they tackled some of the more serious material.

In sum, this textbook has a "tackle first, read later" approach toward learning, which is not always conducive toward building self-confidence: Its approach is like teaching one to swim by throwing one into a pool and seeing how close one gets to drowning before lending a minimalist hand. If you read it, you'll definitely learn how to solve problems extremely well, but you may not preserve your sanity. It is like taking a drink from a fire hydrant.

Excellent for self learners. Better than contemporary texts. Nice applications

This is an excellent textbook for self learners or anyone else who wants to learn the subject. The prerequisites are low, only high school algebra, but the coverage is thorough. The answers to the odd numbered problems are fairly detailed, many are outline solutions rather than just final answers. It is not as theoretical as Rosen, but has lots of nice applications. The authors philosophy is learning by doing. If you are willing to work lots of problems in this text, you will be just as well prepared as some one who studyied from a more advanced book.
