About the Author
Julie Miller is from Daytona State College, where she has taught developmental and upper-level mathematics courses for 20 years. Prior to her work at Daytona State College, she worked as a software engineer for General Electric in the area of flight and radar simulation. Julie earned a bachelor of science in applied mathematics from Union College in Schenectady, New York, and a master of science in mathematics from the University of Florida. In addition to this textbook, she has authored several course supplements for college algebra, trigonometry, and precalculus, as well as several short works of fiction and nonfiction for young readers.
My father is a medical researcher, and I got hooked on math and science when I was young and would visit his laboratory. I can remember using graph paper to plot data points for his experiments and doing simple calculations. He would then tell me what the peaks and features in the graph meant in the context of his experiment. I think that applications and hands-on experience made math come alive for me and I’d like to see math come alive for my students.

Molly ONeill is from Daytona State College, where she has taught for 22 years in the School of Mathematics. She has taught a variety of courses from developmental mathematics to calculus. Before she came to Florida, Molly taught as an adjunct instructor at the University of Michigan-Dearborn, Eastern Michigan University, Wayne State University, and Oakland Community College. Molly earned a bachelor of science in mathematics and a master of arts and teaching from Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Besides this textbook, she has authored several course supplements for college algebra, trigonometry, and precalculus and has reviewed texts for developmental mathematics.
I differ from many of my colleagues in that math was not always easy for me. But in seventh grade I had a teacher who taught me that if I follow the rules of mathematics, even I could solve math problems. Once I understood this, I enjoyed math to the point of choosing it for my career. I now have the greatest job because I get to do math every day and I have the opportunity to influence my students just as I was influenced. Authoring these texts has given me another avenue to reach even more students.

Nancy Hyde served as a full-time faculty member of the Mathematics Department at Broward College for 24 years. During this time she taught the full spectrum of courses from developmental math through differential equations. She received a bachelor of science degree in math education from Florida State University and a master’s degree in math education from Florida Atlantic University. She has conducted workshops and seminars for both students and teachers on the use of technology in the classroom. In addition to this textbook, she has authored a graphing calculator supplement for College Algebra.
I grew up in Brevard County, Florida, where my father worked at Cape Canaveral. I was always excited by mathematics and physics in relation to the space program. As I studied higher levels of mathematics I became more intrigued by its abstract nature and infinite possibilities. It is enjoyable and rewarding to convey this perspective to students while helping them to understand mathematics.

A book for understanding frontiers in new media research

In book "Frontiers in New Media Research", edited by Francis L.F. Lee, Louis Leung, Jack Linchuan Qiu and Donna S.C. Chu, different scholars explore implications of emerging media and social media on society in general and young citizens in particular. The book is divided into three parts, namely, p.1: Techno-Social Formations, p.2: Recurring Issues, and p.3: Emerging Media. It includes sixteen chapters. I found three chapters are very fascinating which describe social media as socio-political engagement. These chapters are namely: (3). The Internet and Democratic Accountability: The Rise of the Fifth Estate, (9). The Emerging Ecology of Online News and (13) The Internet in Flux: Twitter and the Interpretative Flexibility of Microblogging. This book is ideal for scholars in media studies, information studies and communication research. However, I found this book is very costly and less affordable to individual scholars.

More Notes of a Native Son

Bearing the subtitle "More Notes of a Native Son," "Nobody Knows My Name" is a follow-up to Baldwin's earlier, more famous book. Originally published in national magazines between 1954 and 1961, these essays are more mature, if less biting, than his first collection--and they are certainly just as witty. With one notable exception, they are timeless and trenchant commentaries on racial and cultural issues.

The first group of eight essays focuses on the political and social divides in the United States. The opening article reiterates the discovery he made in "Notes of a Native Son": that by living in Europe he paradoxically discovered what it means to be an American. Others examine the despicable inhumanity of a Harlem public housing project ("cheerless as a prison"), the success of the student movement and the rise of Muslim power in black politics ("a very small echo of the black discontent now abroad in the world"), and the first efforts to integrate Southern public schools ("the entire nation has spent a hundred years avoiding the question of the place of the black man in it"). The two most memorable essays detail the daily bravery, trauma, and humiliations of a schoolboy who is the first black in an all-white school and respond to Faulkner's despicable remarks on race (which were made when Faulkner was seemingly drunk and which were later repudiated when he was atypically sober).

The only disappointing essay is "Princes and Power," an account of Le Congres des Ecrivains et Artistes Noirs (Conference of Negro-African Writers and Artists). The internal disputes and lofty goals of this gathering--convened to consider "the history of Euro-African relations" and the postcolonial "cultural inventory"--did not lack for interest, and Baldwin ably relates the tensions between and cross-purposes of American blacks and Africans. But, overall, he seems to be just phoning it in, muffling the obvious passions of the conference participants and highlighting instead the abstract academic tone.

The second and final group of five essays highlight cultural subjects. He follows a speech detailing the outline for an imaginary novel with biographical appraisals of Andre Gide, Ingmar Bergman, Richard Wright, and Normal Mailer. His eulogy for Wright, initially composed and published in three disparate parts, simultaneously expresses regret for Baldwin's youthful criticism of the older author that resulted in the irreparable destruction of their friendship and recounts Wright's sad social decline: "he had managed to estrange himself from almost all of the younger American Negro writers in Paris ... [who] had discovered that Richard did not really know much about the present dimensions and complexity of the Negro problem here, and, profoundly, did not want to know."

But the gem of the collection is "The Black Boy Looks at the White Boy," Baldwin's tongue-in-cheek account of his friendship with Normal Mailer, written both as not-so-subtle payback for Mailer's criticism of Baldwin in the self-indulgent "Advertisements for Myself" and as a tribute to Mailer's talent and "responsibility" as an artist. After sending off a number of barbed (yet good-natured) repartees, Baldwin acknowledges not only Mailer's importance as a "very good friend" but also his worth as a writer. Baldwin's assessment of that career serves at as fitting coda to Baldwin's own essays: "His work, after all, is all that will be left when the newspapers are yellowed, all the gossip columnists silenced, and all the cocktail parties over, and when Norman and you and I are dead."

Good technical content, but lots of errors

I am torn on this book, the majority of the information is great, but there are so many errors in certain chapter (chapter 5 on EIGRP route summarization for instance) it made some already complex topics more confusing. I don't understand all the 5 star ratings, have any of you guys actually started reading this book? I am about 2 months into the routing book, and am somewhat frustrated by the amount of error that is in some of the routing topics. I have to constantly check the errata on the web and the errata is getting bigger every few weeks. I understand this is the first edition of this version of the certification guide, some error are naturally going to be there and fixed over time, but it seems like there should be more technical review and proof reading for some details in the books to avoid confusing the readers especially for those depending on this as a guide to pass certification exams.

Perfect Bundle for CCNP R&S V2 Certification

This library is huge 2000+ pages all-in-one bundle to cover the new CCNP V2 exams. You are getting all the 3 books for your exam preparations. I think, at this point in time no other books are available to cover the exact CCNP V2 syllabus.
Topics are almost same as previous version of CCNP with few exceptions. I feel the authors have done a wonderful job of creating a material with different style and approach in explaining the technology and concepts that are well suited for today’s network infrastructure. I never felt boring while going through topics.

Some of the differences between old and new are Route: IPv6 - dual stack, IOS 15.0, EIGRP IPv6, OSPF IPv6, RIPng, VPN Concepts (DMVPN, EVN), IPv6 NAT etc. SWITCH: SDM configurations, VTP v1-V3, SPAN, RSPAN, Switch hardware etc, TSHOOT: Troubleshooting of IPv6 related topics. I feel that the approaches to explaining things are much better and the scenarios depicted in the book are all based on current deployment trend in the industry. BGP is covered to the level where one can deploy networks with internet connectivity to multiple ISPs. Under Remote Site connectivity topic, author has covered today’s WAN technology like MPLS and various VPN technologies. In Switch, MLS, DHCP, SNMP, 802.1x, IP SLA, SPAN/RSPAN, Stack wise, VSS, HSRP, VRRP, GLBP, VACL, L2 security etc are covered.
Book organization and Parts and chapter: Book organization and style are similar to other cisco press books. Some of the key features are: Starting Quiz, Key Topic flag that represents the topics importance in the exam, “Note” section for caveats, topic’s scope, and important points.
I see lots of diagrams in these books to explain each topic with absolute clarity. You don’t have to go and search once again on the net to understand.

I wondered why TSHOOT book is bigger than the other two. The TSHOOT book is detail oriented and initial chapters which talks about troubleshooting tools are well defined will help network engineers to do advance troubleshooting in today’s networks. Each chapter comes with trouble tickets which provide a process that engineers can follow to isolate problems and fix it. Trouble ticket section provides almost all possible “Show” commands and its output to identify problems.

DVD at the back of the book is as usual contains sample videos and materials which you can buy it if needed. The DVD is mainly for the certification practice exam.

Overall this bundle is a must for new CCNP aspirants and as well as good reference material for CCIE Routing and Switching.

A great read for anybody going for CCNP.

Best follow-up from CCNA series CCNA Routing and Switching 200-120 Official Cert Guide Library and CCNA 640-802 Official Cert Library, Simulator Edition, Updated (3rd Edition) and recommended read for anybody studying for CCNP. I found the book well organized, concise, and well thought through. Examples are clear, crisp, and short on marketing, which is an added value for this series.
Note, there are some editorial errors in the book, together with a few technical mistake - be sure to download the latest errata for this book from the publisher's website.
One star less for very limited set of test questions on the attached DVD - there are just two example exams, with repeated questions, and no sim labs. It is hardly a study material, so be sure to get some online exams available to combine with the book itself.
