The House of Morgan

This is a massive study made by Ron Chernow. With almost 30 years of Wall Street behavior since its publication, it is difficult to understand or much less know what we as a nation have learned about American finance and its place in our political life. Whether this book deserves a 3, 4, or 5 star rating I will leave to the individual reader. I am not an economist but simply a retired Latin teacher with much time to read. Yet, the idea that a free market economy can exist without reasonable governmental regulation seems absurd to me. Those who put forth such a belief are putting too much power in the hands of far too few people who don't care about the interests of the vast majority of this nation. It is a mentality of greed for the few. I am not a proponent of Socialism but I do believe in economic justice. I also believe that can be achieved by a proactive progressive government that knows its responsibility is the general welfare of the people.

Well written, interesting information, but lacking in clear analysis.

Chernow is on of my favorite authors because he tackles complex financial subjects and makes them accessible to ordinary readers. The HOUSE OF MORGAN is a truly monumental undertaking. Chernow writes with his usual clarity and grace. Unfortunately, too much of the book is consumed with details of the personal lives of the prominent executives. While these are interesting they contribute little to illuminating the forces that reshaped the great banks from underwriters into financial buccaneers who laid waste to what had been a kind of operational and even ethical code stabilizing the world investing and building economies.

In the work of a lesser author this would be less important. Given Chernow's talents, however, this is most disappointing.

That was the word from John Pierpont Morgan in the summer of 1873 prior to the panic of 1873 caused by the failure of Jay Cooke.Would they have continued to earn 6% through this panic?Doubtful.It is important that I put aside any personal differences with this gentleman in considering that we will probably never see somebody like this ever again in world business history.He spawned something that continues in some form to this very day. The reasons are as simple as such business is complex.Everything from regulation to even restrictive zoning wouldn't allow it.He didn't partake of business practices which would be considered "arms length" that would evolve into conflicts of interest.He wasn't just a money lender.He would take a business interest that most banks would have to shy away from today.He also did good things for the industry.He became the lender of last resort where a central bank did not exist at the time.He rescued banks and even bailed out New York City more than once.Remarkably,he made it look easy.This book begins with his father and George Peabody and ends with the move from the corner of Wall & Broad Streets to 60 Wall Street.I myself would be interested in what the author could write about into the present day.He uses an academic template as these stories have been told and retold over the generations.He has updated some of them because at the time when some of this occurred,we wouldn't have been privy to the details,some bordering on gossip in that society.A crash?We'd find out soon enough.An affair?Why would we ever have to know at the time.Congressional hearings?It a matter of public record.Glass Steagle?It's the law of the land till repealed. Shelf registration?A new business complexion.Big Bang and so forth.Banking had certainly changed from the late 19th century to now.By the time of the Reagan/Bush Revolution it was purely fee driven.This was actually a turn around from the way J.P. Morgan did his business before he died.This book will fill you in on all the people,places,and things.Our collective business memory is one thing,but alas,it's not practical to think that John Pierpont Morgan could be immortal.

Wonderful work of art. A highly imaginative trip through the season.

What a journey! The author uses words as his medium and paints such a wondrous landscape for the reader. I thoroughly enjoyed it and the stories within our culture that it brought to life. The message is something that brings depth to the book and left me deep in thought. Each of the characters was fun; I just wish we could get to know them a little better and spend more time with them. This would be a terrific read-a-loud book. Any plans to make an audio version, Mr. Shockley?

The book itself is fine however, the title explicitly states that the Kindle version comes with an access code to the Navigate 2 Essentials site. After extensively searching the book and contacting Amazon I was informed that the Kindle version does not have an access code despite falsely being advertised and sold with the impression that this would be included. If you buy the Kindle version just be aware that you will not gain access to the Navigate 2 Essentials site and will have to find an alternate means to an access code.

I'm currently taking an EMT course and this is definitely the handbook of it all. If you buy the new version, there's an online access code in the back cover that gives you access to online quizzes, summaries, outlined, audio book, etc. for 1year :) Definitely handy for reviewing when you're driving and also when you want to test yourself on the material. The book can also be a paper holder for strong winds and kill spiders, or knock someone down if this was thrown at them (it's thick with knowledge). 0_0

UPDATE: This book DOES come with an access code. HOWEVER, you need to confirm what access code you NEED first. This text book comes with ESSENTIALS access, not ADVANTAGE, PREFERRED or PREMIER. Many EMS classes require PREMIER so you need to make sure you are purchasing what you need.

I originally rated this 5 stars. However, I'm changing it to 1. This whole access code nonsense is very deceptive, especially when many people believe it is what they need when it says "Essentials."

probably rates as one of the very best reads of all time. Witty,at time so hillarious that you shed tears and have to stop reading to ease the pains in the stomach. I read Rosie first when it was first released. I have reread it many times since and the effect is always the same. Others to whom I have loaned the book agree..consequently my copy tends to go 'walkabout' and I have to rebuy.
Do your soul a favour and read Rosie, you wont regret it.

This was not the book I wanted. I wanted the original Lawrence Durrell book, not a children's edition. There was no hint that this would be a children's book. I am very disappointed and feel I was not properly informed.

Sadly, a little dated for modern kids

I loved this book as a kid and was looking forward to sharing it with my kids. Unfortunately, I think it's a little dated and so the "joke" did not resonate as well. I'd recommend other books from Macaulay, instead. I wish he did an update!

I first read this as a child ever since, I've always been just a tad skeptical of archaeology. I try to respect the science and the research, but there is always a part of me going, "Are you sure it isn't just a bathroom?" Great book, lovely illustrations, and a premise that will quite literally stay with you for years.

Excellent, but this whole field lacks scientific rigor

As a middle in a large family and having middles of my own, this book explained much. To my surprise, it also illuminated my relationship with my firstborn wife. I had not read any books on birth order before this one, but had heard the various theories over the years. What this book did for me was make me glad I'm a middleborn. I'll take the package of strengths and weaknesses of the middleborn over the first-, last- or only-born any day. I'm equally glad I have some middles of my own for the same reasons. I also don't blame my parents for any of the "negative" consequences of being a middleborn. In the end, my birth order (among other things) created a set of circumstances that helped form who I am...and I like who I am. My birth order doesn't define me, but it helps explain me. I think the explanatory power of birth order would vary greatly among individuals.

My one criticism of any birth order work is that it's too easy to find famous people whose lives fit a particular mold. It reminds me of horoscopes somewhat. We can all pick a particular sign, then go find a famous person who exemplifies most of the traits of that sign. Doing so doesn't prove anything even though many uncritical minds think it does. While I enjoyed reading about how famous middles exemplified a particular middleborn trait, I couldn't help but think that this is a classic case of a "model searching for data" rather than "data searching for a model." The former is a cardinal sin in the scientific world, but it happens all the time, especially in the softer sciences like psychology. Could an equally powerful set of examples be selected that would argue against the author's hypotheses? Still Salmon seems to be aware of the bias inherent in this type of research and is careful not to overstate what the data tells us.
