The Romantic Machine: Utopian Science and Technology after Napoleon, by John Tresch

In the years immediately following Napoleon’s defeat, French thinkers in all fields set their minds to the problem of how to recover from the long upheavals that had been set into motion by the French Revolution. Many challenged the Enlightenment’s emphasis on mechanics and questioned the rising power of machines, seeking a return to the organic unity of an earlier age and triggering the artistic and philosophical movement of romanticism. Previous scholars have viewed romanticism and industrialization in opposition, but in this groundbreaking volume John Tresch reveals how thoroughly entwined science and the arts were in early nineteenth-century France and how they worked together to unite a fractured society.

Focusing on a set of celebrated technologies, including steam engines, electromagnetic and geophysical instruments, early photography, and mass-scale printing, Tresch looks at how new conceptions of energy, instrumentality, and association fueled such diverse developments as fantastic literature, popular astronomy, grand opera, positivism, utopian socialism, and the Revolution of 1848. He shows that those who attempted to fuse organicism and mechanism in various ways, including Alexander von Humboldt and Auguste Comte, charted a road not taken that resonates today.

Essential reading for historians of science, intellectual and cultural historians of Europe, and literary and art historians, The Romantic Machine is poised to profoundly alter our understanding of the scientific and cultural landscape of the early nineteenth century.

Review
“A work which brings into glittering relief the materials of scientific exploration in the early nineteenth century and reveals how scientists were, beyond the ostensible field of enquiry, profoundly engaged with the emotive, social and spiritual dimensions of their discoveries. . . . Of certain appeal to historians of science and scholars in popular culture The Romantic Machine . . . makes a distinct contribution to the study of technological thought, and gestures frequently towards the work of figures as diverse as Bergson, Deleuze, and Simondon.” (Greg Kerr, University of Glasgow Nineteenth-Century French Studies)

“Recommended.” (P. D. Skiff, Bard College Choice)

“Tresch’s work contains many interesting and provocative insights. . . . [It] belongs in every research library.” (Jeff Horn, Manhattan College American Historical Review)

“Tresch offers something new and exciting to historians of nineteenth-century France. His effort will hopefully encourage other innovative perspectives on the relationship between the arts and sciences.” (Robert D. Priest, Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge Reviews in History)

“Illuminating a spectrum of heterodox approaches grouped under the umbrella term ‘mechanical romanticism,’ Tresch makes an insistent and compelling case for why the current cultural impasse between science- and creative-types is far from inevitable. In this vision, sound science need not transpire without a lyrical core, while efficiency need not obviate moments of effusive, ecstatic connection.” (Courtney Fiske Brooklyn Rail)

“Tresch’s book restores to machines the dignity of wonder, of experimentation, openness, and beauty. It does so without neglecting the inexorable logic of material components, of thermodynamic laws, and of scientific axioms, and without blindness for the social and economic forces to which industrial machines will be subjected. The Romantic Machine not only describes utopian science and technology, but is itself a messenger from a utopia where technical objects regain their language and become agents in the complex history of nineteenth-century culture.” (Helmut Muller-Sievers Centaurus)

“John Tresch, in this beautifully written and masterfully researched book, tackles the age-old gap between romanticism and science, and succeeds in bridging a divide that is so long-established that it has become the basic template for many researchers in the field. . . . [A] major tour de force.” (Benjamin Bcle French Studies)

"Erudite and engaging. . . . Tresch’s study has the potential to transform how we understand the nineteenth century. The wide range of 'machines' at work in this study as well as the cultural arguments it makes also means that this study reaches far beyond any narrow definition of the history of science and technology." (Seminar: A Journal of Germanic Studies)

“This is one of the rare products of our field that can be recommended with confidence to readers yet to be persuaded of the centrality of science and its applications in the fashioning of Western literate culture. It is a fascinating book and a must for anyone seeking to get to grips with the complex, knotty roots of modernity.” (Robert Fox Metascience)

“Tresch’s focus on specific material objects is immensely rewarding; through them, he is able to uncover an entire world that rejected the binary of living/mechanical that we have come to see as inevitable.” (Theresa Levitt Technology and Culture)

“The Romantic Machine is a boldly original and riotously interdisciplinary essay in the history of science that reinterprets romanticism for our own era. Situated within a dense fabric of political, moral, aesthetic, and epistemological concerns, Tresch’s early nineteenth-century ‘mechanical romantics’ reject human mastery over nature as the goal of science, opting instead for limited regulation and sustainable coexistence.” (Jan Goldstein, University of Chicago)

“In this fascinating and philosophically rich tale, Tresch re-invokes a world in which machines are not unnatural, dead mechanisms but vessels, affordances, ‘organs’ even, of nature’s expansive self-expression. These romantic machines and charismatic technologies could—and still do—draw forth invisible powers within materialities human and not. Tresch’s account of the ‘alchemical conjunction of romanticism and mechanism’ is itself a brilliant admixture of the history of science, nature-philosophy, and political theory. A wonderful and rewarding book.” (Jane Bennett, Johns Hopkins University)

“With The Romantic Machine, John Tresch fulfills the goal of most recent history of science: to show that when you follow scientific achievements you end up describing a whole culture, including its literature and arts. By proposing a new interpretation of post-Napoleonic Paris’s material culture, Tresch shows the fecundity of his notion of cosmogram as the foundation of a different historical anthropology, one that includes science and technology and is not led by any teleology toward ‘modernity.’ On the contrary, by reinterpreting romanticism, he shows how much we could learn from this early nineteenth century period for understanding our own contradictory cosmograms today.” (Bruno Latour, Sciences Po Paris)

John Tresch is associate professor in the Department of History and Sociology of Science at the University of Pennsylvania.

subtle and careful yet staggeringly ambitious--
By Poetry Fan
There's a great deal to say about this book--much more than should appear in one of these little reviews, but I'm so knocked out by this book I needed to express my esteem right away. I should say first that this is really the best looking university press book I've ever seen. It's worth springing for the hardcover over the kindle. Also, with the hardcover version it is easier to see the illustrations that have been meticulously culled and presented here. That might be my own prejudice.

So in this space I'll just also say that the book covers so much ground that it really can be used in a wide array of contexts--history/science/ and literary courses. But it also strikes me that this book can appeal to a general reader since by crossing so many methods and disciplines, the author never gets bogged down in jargon. At every turn it is rigorous and learned, as well, and clearly it will leave a lasting mark in how we think about the ways that technology and ideas of self, culture, history are all intertwined. In fact what Tresch most brilliantly shows is that all things are much more intertwined than we usually can see. The writing is clear and illuminating and the scholarship meticulous and provocative. Would that all researches this careful about the material and as committed to the prose.

rethinking romanticism
By JOHN L.MCCREERY
Is romanticism inherently opposed to science and technology and intrinsically linked to fascism? For a few brief decades at the start of the nineteenth century, at least in Paris, the answer was no. Human, machine, and nature were seen as integral parts of a more rational, egalitarian, and harmonious future. _Romantic Machines_ brings that historical moment to vivid life and projects an appealing alternative to currently popular dystopian views. A must-read for policy makers and concerned citizens alike.

Intriguing but sometimes skewed
By W. J. Reedy
Overall, an interesting, if sometimes quite selective and procrustean study. For example, Bonald's ideological take on "science" is best understood from the perspective of medieval and early-modern Catholic philosophy not in the context of early 19th c. Romanticism, even Romantic biology. Moreover, Bonald's first name was not "Joseph," but "Louis"!

Amazon.com Review
There are times when a dictionary definition simply does not suffice, but one hasn't the time, inclination, or industry to work one's way through an extensive encyclopedia entry. Enter the desk reference. Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Encyclopedia is no larger than your average collegiate dictionary, yet it packs enough punch to make one feel, if not fluent in a subject, then certainly conversant. Gone are the days of dry, just-the-facts-ma'am desk encyclopedias. This one, created in cooperation with Encyclopaedia Britannica and with the assistance of 25 academic consultants, has personality. The entry for Fassbinder, for example, goes beyond merely listing his nationality, dates, and films. "Defiantly homosexual and provocative," it tells us, "he led an outrageous life and died from a drug overdose at 36." The nighthawk is so exceptionally described that one can almost hear its "sharp nasal call" and the whirring sound it makes when it dives during courtship. The 25,000 entries are illustrated by more than 1,650 photographs, drawings, maps, and diagrams. And, at nearly 1,800 pages, this volume is surprisingly not unwieldy; a spectacular addition to anyone's reference arsenal. --Jane Steinberg

From Library Journal
A new title in the "Merriam-Webster's Collegiate" line, this one-volume reference resulted from a collaboration with the editorial staff of the Encyclopedia Britannica. In fact, the articles here (over 25,000) are based on Britannica's flagship 32-volume set. The editors have managed to pack considerable information into this work, which is physically the same size as the Concise Columbia Encyclopedia (Houghton, 1994) but has twice as many pages and half again as many entries. And what entries they are! The articles are well researched, clearly written, and comprehensive yet keep between 40 and 700 words in length. In addition, the cartographers did an amazing job. The map included with each country entry is readable, visually interesting, and filled with useful information; cities other than the capital are included, as are landmarks and other distinguishing features. Each of these entries also contains a smaller map showing the country's location on the globe, more evidence of the attention to detail one finds throughout the work. All in all, this is a wonderful encyclopedia. Recommended for public and academic libraries.DManya Chylinski, Ctr. for Business Knowledge, Ernst & Young, Boston

From Booklist
This new one-volume desk encyclopedia is a noteworthy addition to Merriam-Webster's "collegiate" line of reference products, which includes Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary (first published in 1898) and Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Thesaurus (first published in 1976). The encyclopedia is a collaborative effort between the editorial staffs of Merriam-Webster's and Encyclopaedia Britannica. Britannica articles selected for abridged inclusion were chosen by a group of academic consultants, including editors of dictionaries and specialized encyclopedias as well as publishers of introductory college textbooks. A list of the consultants and their affiliations is included, as is a list of freelance writers and editors involved in production of this reference tool. In all, there were more than 100 contributors to this three-year-long project.

The encyclopedia was written for the college student, as the title suggests, but is also an appropriate research tool for upper-level high-school students and a general adult audience. More than 25,000 brief articles range in length from 40 to 700 words. They are alphabetized letter by letter. Variant spellings or names are printed in bold type, and pronunciations are provided. Cross-references to other articles are indicated by bullets. More than 1,650 black-and-white photographs, maps, diagrams, and other illustrations enhance entries. For each country there is a fairly detailed political map (sometimes as large as half a page), as well as a locator map. There is coverage of topics and people in art, business, geography, history, literature, medicine, music, religion, science, and more.

Similar in scope and content to Webster's New World Encyclopedia (Prentice Hall, 1992), Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Encyclopedia is recommended for libraries that do not own a recently published one-volume encyclopedia. With 51,000 entries, The Columbia Encyclopedia, now in its sixth edition [RBB Ja 1 & 15 01], is more comprehensive, but Merriam-Webster's compact size makes it easier to handle for quick reference questions. Essential Desk and Armchair Companion
By Orin Hargraves
If you've had the experience of looking up something in the dictionary and then being disappointed either because it wasn't there or the definition stopped just short of what you wanted to know, this is the book for you. It's really great for filling in small gaps of knowledge about thousands of topics, telling you just as much as you need to know to understand a reference to a person, place, or subject in context. The extensive cross-references are an invitation to delightful browsing. Best of all, the material is largely condensed from Britannica, so you know you're getting access to information written by the top experts in all fields. I've been using it for only a few weeks now and I can't imagine being without it; a real gem among reference books.

Very good value
By William
One gets quite a lot for one's money with this one-volume encyclopedia. It's impressive how the editors at Merriam-Webster are able to make a book that is so comprehensive and concise at the same time.
There are a couple of odd things about it, though. Many of the articles cover topics that concern current events, with articles on recent celebrities like Jerry Seifeld and companies like Microsoft. Unfortunately, such current topics must come at the expense of other less current topics. This excessive concentration on current topics could make the book date quite rapidly.
Also, many of the articles have been lifted straight from the Encyclopedia Britannica. This would not have been a problem if the editors had taken advantage of the opportunity to revise the articles to bring them up to date, but unfortunately they didn't do so in many cases. The net result of these two editorial decisions is to give the book a straight-from-the-headlines feel for one article, and then an ancient feel for the next.

The Lexus of desktop encyclopedias
By A Customer
I've been using the new "Merriam-Webster Collegiate Encyclopedia" for several months and can say without reservation, that at long last, there is a matching desk encyclopedia commensurate with its distinguished sibling, the "Merriam-Webster Collegiate Dictionary".
For many years, the "Concise Columbia Encyclopedia" was recognized as the best encyclopedia of its size. I have long used that fine reference and have come to know its shortcomings. One of the primary objectives of a general reference work of such limited size must be to offer as much useful information as possible, by judicious use of available space. This is also a major concern of a quality desk dictionary, given the vast extent of English vocabulary.
The good people at Merriam-Webster have much experience in the art of utilizing such limited space to full advantage, and it shows. The Merriam-Webster Collegiate Encyclopedia contains much more of everything compared to the Concise Columbia; more pages, more text per page, more illustrations, more thoroughly researched and timely articles, and a more attractive and engaging format. The "Merriam-Webster Collegiate Encyclopedia" is simply the most useful and informative encyclopedia of its size, offering nearly 1800 pages of concise and trenchant articles, presented in crisp clear typography, on thin high-grade white paper, and all bound in a handsome and sturdy volume.
Here then is appropriate, authoritative, and accurate information at your fingertips. ...this book is a remarkable value, and a vade mecum for anyone who reads, writes, or is curious about the world.

Guicciardini: Dialogue on the Government of Florence (Cambridge Texts in the History of Political Thought), by Francesco Guicciardini

This is the first English translation of Guicciardini's Dialogue on the Government of Florence, written in the 1520s. Like Machiavelli, his more famous contemporary and friend, Guicciardini rejects classical republican arguments in the name of the new political realism and acknowledges the important role of patronage and graft in contemporary politics and the illegitimacy of nearly all forms of political power, arguing for the priority of state interest over private morality and religion.

overlooked but essential political theory reading
By Ovidius
Written between 1521-24, the book consists of a dialogue between four leading Florentine citizens in 1494, one of whom defends the old Medici regime and three of whom defend the new republican government (adding pathos to the dialogue is the fact that the main speaker and defender of the Medici regime, Bernardo del Nero, was in fact summarily executed by the new regime in 1497 for involvement with a planned Medici coup).

Part I is a profound (and still relevant) debate on the merits and demerits of both narrow government and republican government. It should be essential reading for anyone doing political theory.

Part II turns to Guicciardini's ideal constitutional arrangement for Florence (still in the form of a dialogue). Constitutional arrangement is an eminently practical topic but one I find laborious reading. There are many excellent and relevant parts in part II but when it comes to how many people should sit on one imaginary council and how many on another, etc., it makes dry reading. Part II, in implicit dialogue with Machiavelli, also defends the model of the Venetian constitution over the Roman constitution.

There are many relevant ideas in the _Dialogue_ but to give a taste of Guicciardini's late Renaissance thought, here is one on the relationship between equality and liberty:

"although the basis of a free city is equality, nonetheless one can't prevent citizens enjoying different status according to their different levels of intelligence, virtue and merit" (115).
