About the Author
Gary F. Kelly has been a sexuality educator for 35 years, publishing several popular books in the field. After a 30-year career as a Counselor and Vice President for Student Affairs at Clarkson University, and as Headmaster of The Clarkson School, he retired from administrative work to devote more time to writing, teaching, and counseling. He continues to teach the undergraduate courses in human sexuality and psychoactive substances in the Psychology Department at Clarkson University.
Kelly was an innovator in developing graduate training in human sexuality for counselors, and taught graduate courses in the counseling and human development program at St. Lawrence University for over 20 years. He maintains a practice as a licensed mental health counselor.
As a person who strongly believes that young people must have solid basic information about sex and their own sexuality to make rational and responsible decisions, Kelly presents here a balanced approach to the physical as well as the psychological and sociological aspects of human sexuality. His work with students received national recognition with his election to the board of directors of the Sexuality Information and Education Council of the United States (SIECUS).
Kelly served for 8 years as the editor of the Journal of Sex Education and Therapy, and presently serves as a member of the Editorial Board of the American Journal of Sexuality Education. He is a member of the American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors, and Therapists and of the Society for the Scientific Study of Human Sexuality. He is also a diplomate of the American Board of Sexology and a clinical fellow of the American Academy of Clinical Sexologists. He believes that his work with people in teaching, counseling, and therapy over the years has enlarged his personal and professional perspective on how people integrate their sexuality into their lives. The real people stories and real student voices in the book reflect that perspective.

Great textbook!

Great textbook, I hardly ever used it in class because we didn't go by the book, but I definitely used it for reference material. If you're a psych major, this is a must have in your library, it talks about all kinds of things, not just sex obviously. It's pretty current with the times, hence "today" but even if it's 2025, I think it can still be applied. It can be a little graphic, so take caution when reading this in public - there are pictures and drawn graphics! We're all adults, but just proceed with care - you never know who's around or who's reading over your shoulder!

for better or for worse

Sexuality Today is a textbook I just finished reading for my Psychology of Human Sexuality course. Its main strength is also its weakness: Most of the book focuses on biological, medical, and sociological aspects of human sexuality in addition to focusing on the psychological aspects. This is a strength of the book because it gives the Reader a clear sense for the full scope of what is known about human sexuality. But it is also a weakness of the book because a psychological book, I think, should be mainly focused on (1) correctly assessing and diagnosing what would constitute some rough-and-rocky idea of healthy human sexuality and certain kinds of sexual disorders, and (2) positively treating sexual disorders and encouraging people to express their healthy sexuality. This textbook does not follow this approach, for better or for worse.

Good for advanced high school or college freshmen

This book was required for a graduate program. I was turned off by the simplification and the use of drawings and illustration where theory and discussion were expected. I literally, more than once, found my topic in the index only to flip to the page and see pictures where I was hoping for in depth consideration.
That said, my first thought was that this might be a great book to use in high school or beginning college courses. It does a great job with a broad number of topics, it just isnt as useful for greater depth.
If students arent seeing this level of sexuality work until graduate school, there is something seriously misding at the undergrad level.
