Decent yet short read

I guess the key to writing is to have your readers wanting more and at less than 90 pages long, I was intrigued by the subject and desired to keep reading. I read this alongside "All Joy and No Fun", which is a similar study on modern parenthood. The two books both explain how marriage wasn't for love until the 1800s in the Western world. This switch and ideas of perfect love from movies and TV has created a lot of extremes in romance, many of them unattainable contrasted with those who are in arranged marriages. It is stated that a couple needs more than romantic love and sex to sustain them and I agree with that. Divorce rates are high because there is an ideal that people think is out there, the what if, the this could make my life better...when they should look at what is around them, unless of course, it is a violent relationship of course.

Short and Sweet without a Lot of Depth

The topic of this book (the goals of marriage and how they affect the larger society) interested me and continues to interest me. I am fascinated by the evolution of marriage in our society (and other societies) and how those changes impact marriage, families, and the society as a whole.

The author's conclusion seems to be that, while it is a good idea to marry (at least in part) due to affection, people should not leave marriage simply due to their partner's inability to meet every (unrealistic) expectation that they might have. Mr. Bruckner makes a strong case against ending a marriage because ephemeral feelings have done what such feelings usually will do -- fade over time.

While I agreed with much of the author said, ultimately I was not satisfied with the book. I think that there are three main reasons why I am not a fan of the book.

First, the author's writing style and organization did not work. It was difficult to grasp the development of Mr. Bruckner's arguments -- and not because they were especially subtle or sophisticated.

Second, the author proposed no true solution (either societal or individual) to the problem that he diagnoses. It seems that he is suggesting that people ought to lower their expectations toward their mates and realize that no one person can meet every emotional, financial, romantic, and sexual desire that a person might have. I write "it seems..." because that is the conclusion that I reached after having read his book, but this conclusion is not clearly stated by the author. Still, the author should have been more clear about his recommendations and they should have been more robust.

Third, I think that book would have benefited from less of the author's personal thoughts (and ramblings) and more statistics and historical information about marriage. It read a little too much like: "This is how my acquaintances -- who are Western European upper-middle class intelligentsia -- perceive marriage...." -- although a statement as clear as this one would have been welcome! In order to understand marriage in the Western world in the twenty-first century, it is important to understand its history and why marriage became "marriage for love." Mr. Bruckner does not adequately explore this important aspect of this issue. (Given how short the book is, it is not surprising that Mr. Bruckner was not able to give this type of context.)

The main benefit that I see to the book is that it raises the profile of the problem that the author does identify. For that reason (primarily), I give the book three stars.

Quick read, but interesting and thought provoking.

First off, at less than 100 pages long, this is a quick read, but quality isn't hinged on quantity. This tiny book packs a lot of good, interesting information into a few pages. Although I knew that arranged/convenience marriages were the norm in other "non-western" places, and arranged marriages had always been made for political reasons (like uniting kingdoms), I had never really thought considered it a "Western" practice. This book opened my eyes to how the "western" practice of marrying for love is actually a fairly new concept, not really coming into practice until the 1800's. This "idea" of marrying for love, and "happily ever after" is also promoted by the media (for example most Disney movies and every Harlequin romance book/movie ever.)

It is this "marrying for love" concept that the author claims is weakening the marriage institution. Couples who marry for love often find that there are times when they don't love their partner, and instead of working through these feelings, they leave their partner to continue looking for their "happily ever after." They lack the tools or even desire to work through problems because "they" feel that a good marriage doesn't need work.

I enjoyed this book, it is a quick read and is an interesting subject.

Repetitive and lacking specifics

After reading the author's other two books, the Warrior Diet and Maximum Muscle, Minimum Fat, I was expecting this book to be very informative and specific to the athletic population and going in depth on how to optimize nutrition and training for gaining muscle and getting leaner. I was honestly very disappointed.

The book is extremely repetitive, and I wonder if there was any editor involved in the writing whatsoever. Not only is the same point rehashed on the same page or in the same chapter, but it's repeated in later chapters as well. Looks more like a series of disconnected thoughts or independent articles collected without any thought for coherence.

You will also find a lot of contradictions. He swears by low glycemic, low carbs - but goes into great detail explaining how our muscle fibers (and even a theory of a "super hybrid fiber") who responds the most to short and intense training - requires carbs as its primary fuel. The best way to get carbs is to rely on gluconeogenesis from amino acid conversion, yet recommends a maximum of 20g of whey for a feeding to maximize assimilation.

During the day and for your post-exercise recovery meals you should protein-pulse feed, eating fast assimilating proteins, basically nothing but yoghurt with whey from grass-fed cows which the author himself, incidentally, sells at his website. Then later on he says you can eat eggs and cheese during the day, which in his previous chapters is a slow assimilating protein and better eaten for the evening meal. Stay away from most carbs for your recovery meals because it can directly inhibit anabolism. In one study in people over the age of 60, no less. Then later on recommends having carbs in the window of opportunity (which would be your recovery meals) because glycolytic fibers are targeted during training.

No specifics at all except 20g of whey every 2-3hrs during the day, but how much should you eat for the evening meal? Until full? For hard training athletes, that's not going to cut it if you want to perform at an advanced level. He does say that according to your stats and fitness level you will get more out of carbs vs fats, but there is no suggestion on ratios or anything you could infer from a total protein count. Intermittent fasting, but a whey feeding basically achieves the same effect, so a fasted workout isn't really a fasted workout. Does that mean you can start your whey pulsing when you get up, or should you wait a few hours?

The workouts - you should combine explosive exercise with heavy weights in the 5RM range, then lists exercises such as running up and down stairs lifting dumbells or running on a treadmill holding weights overhead or out in front of you. Good luck doing that with 5RM loads.

If you have his previous two books, don't waste your money on this one. If you don't, you can get the same type of information just by reading his free articles and interviews. I recommend publishing some type of guidelines for what and how much to eat for the evening meal + sample workouts in a 2nd edition if he wants people to buy and recommend his book. And get an editor to remove all the repetition. Would probably cut the page count in half, though - but if you can replace those pages with some useful content it would be worth it.

Good not Great

I have been expectantly awaiting the release of this book for months and I stayed up past midnight to read it on my Kindle as soon as it came out. I have to say I am a little bit underwhelmed. First of all a lot of the information Ori presents has been available in various articles and interviews he has given through the previous year or so. I feel like there is nothing dramatic being introduced here. Also he is a little short on specifics. For example he keeps saying that we should have small meals interspersed through the day. Fine what is his definition of a small meal 200 calories,300 calories,400 calories? I do not want to come across as over-negative because I feel that the program presented has value and I plan on incorporating many features. Also if you are new to the world of low carb, high intensity exercise this book will be a good primer. Maybe I was expecting too much.

Maximum Muscle, Minimum Fat for the lay person

I have all of Ori's books, and have read this one twice since I got 4 days ago. I like the book much better than MMMF, his previous book. His previous book felt like it was written for someone with a graduate degree in Biology. This book is a lot simplier to read and implement and a good way to share the biological reasons to follow the Warrior Diet and Controlled Fatigue Training with non diet and fitness fanatics that do not have the patience to wade through some of his other books. When looking at Ori's works, the first thing to keep in mind is he is a philospher. His diets and workouts are based on his active survival philosphy. Having said that, he obviously looks for the research to back up his ideas, this 150 page book has an additional 20 pages of references. The book IS repetative, it could have been edited down to half the size or less without loss of substance, it felt like it was stretched out so it could be published. A couple of chapters in the middle are plugs as to why you should buy his protein and supplements. My single biggest complaint is that I wish he would have summed up the concrete actions with a bullet list at the end of the chapter or end of the book.

As to the previous comment about running on stairs with 5 RM weight, Ori said exercise intensely such as using a 5 RM weight OR running with a LIGHT weight overhead that you can hold up for 3 minutes continously (which may only be the weight of your hands).

While this book is not a complete diet and fitness worldview like the the Warrior Diet, it has lots of useful nuggets and worth the price of two magazines. I would buy it again, it gave me some new ideas on how to tweak my diet and workout. I love the way Ori presents ideas and information that no one else is talking about. Whether you agree with it or not, it is a breath of fresh air.

About the Author
Edwin M. Hartman was Visiting Professor of Business Ethics and co-director of the Paduano Seminar in Business Ethics at the Stern School of Business, New York University, until his retirement in December 2009. Before joining Stern, he taught for more than twenty years in the business school and the philosophy department at Rutgers University, where he was founding director of the Prudential Business Ethics Center. He is the author of Substance, Body, and Soul: Aristotelian Investigations, Conceptual Foundations of Organization Theory and Organizational Ethics and the Good Life (named Book of the Year (2003) by the Social Issues in Management Division of the Academy of Management).

Thoughtful argument for the relevance of virtue ethics to business (between 4.0 and 4.5 stars)

This book offers a thoughtful summary of, and apologia for, virtue ethics in a business context. The author (EH) has a broad knowledge not only of the writings of the key philosopher for this field, Aristotle, but also of contemporary business ethics literature, some of it very recent (within months of the book's electronic publication). And he does a good job of explaining many sophisticated philosophical ideas in clear and direct language, quite unlike most academic philosophy.

The first four chapters of the book concentrate on explaining Aristotle's ideas. Chapter 5 then applies them to an organizational context, often using Alasdair MacIntyre's somewhat anti-business "After Virtue" (1981) -- a book often credited with inspiring a modern revival of interest in virtue ethics -- as a foil. EH's goal is to show that it is possible to lead a virtuous life within a capitalist business. Chapter 6 has many interesting things to say about the challenges of teaching virtue ethics, and Chapter 7 considers whether this chunk of Aristotelianism has relevance in a multicultural business world.

I myself teach a short module of business ethics in leadership training programs for corporate executives, though at between 35 and 55 years old they may be a bit older than EH's usual students. I agree with EH that virtue ethics is in many situations a superior approach to the ethical dilemmas faced by businesspeople -- and that it's also the most challenging to teach. Students are usually more comfortable with what they perceive as the simple rules and algorithms of deontological and utilitarian ethical approaches. EH's observation, "The notion that business is essentially about maximizing something can create a mindset that a business ethics course can barely penetrate" [64%] made me laugh out loud in sympathy.

However, my teaching experience also makes me skeptical that this book would be enjoyable reading for any but the most intellectual and dedicated business executives (a few of whom might instead dive straight into Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics). A lot of the discussion focuses more on the writings of other ethicists than on examples from life in business organizations. In comparison, Michael Sandel's books are much richer in concrete illustrations of ethical problems. For students, especially ones who are already in the business world, I think a book like Schwartz and Sharpe's "Practical Wisdom: The Right Way to Do the Right Thing" (2010) is a more user-friendly introduction to Aristotelian ideas. EH's book may be more appropriate as a motivating pep-talk for ethics instructors.

EH warns us in the introduction that his is a particular interpretation of Aristotle with which some might disagree, and indeed I did on some small points. Some of his interpretations made use of relatively modern philosophical concepts, such as his references to "rationality" (which doesn't appear in the translation of the Nic. Eth. that EH relies on), or when he says that Aristotle had a "deficient notion of rights" (Chap. 3, n.25; rights didn't become prominent in political thought until roughly 2000 years after Aristotle's death). Elsewhere, he speaks of buying someone lunch as "creating eudaimonia for you and him" [18%]; I had thought of eudaimonia as something determined over much longer timeframes. A strength of the book is its discussion of how each person is responsible for choosing his or her own commitments; I found it a bit narrow, then, that the discussion of business was always in a capitalist, "free market" context. Maybe it's inherently more virtuous to choose to work for a non-profit, or a cooperative, or in other sectors of the "solidarity economy." It would have been nice to see this issue discussed, just as it would have been nice to see some general recognition of Continental authors on ethics and economy, to diversify the very "Anglo-Saxon" crew in the bibliography (I'm speaking intellectually, of course, not ethnically). The work of Luigino Bruni, Stefano Zamagni and many other Italian scholars in the field of "civil economy" is especially pertinent, because it, too, rests ultimately on an Aristotelian foundation. Some of that group's work is available in English.

I read this book in an ebook edition (Kindle for iPad), because it was the only edition available even more than a month past the publisher's official release dates for the other ones. At the time, the price was less than 25% of the hardcover's, and less than 50% of the paperback's; I hope that the pricing is still so reasonable when you read this. I find reading ebooks quite unpleasant and inefficient, but this was less exasperating than some. In particular, navigating from text to endnotes to bibliography and back again was fairly fluid. I do wish the publisher had included real page numbers, though. All in all, a solid book about a diffuse-seeming topic for those who use applied ethics in their teaching.

Kindergarten-Grade 2—Amos McGee, an elderly man who works at the zoo, finds time each day for five special friends. With empathy and understanding he gives the elephant, tortoise, penguin, rhinoceros, and owl the attention they need. One morning, Amos wakes up with a bad cold and stays home in bed. His friends wait patiently and then leave the zoo to visit him. Their trip mirrors his daily bus ride to the zoo and spans three nearly wordless spreads. Amos, sitting up in bed, clasps his hands in delight when his friends arrive. The elephant plays chess with him, and the tortoise plays hide-and-seek. The penguin keeps Amos's feet warm, while the rhinoceros offers a handkerchief when Amos sneezes. They all share a pot of tea. Then the owl, knowing that Amos is afraid of the dark, reads a bedtime story as the other animals listen. They all sleep in Amos's room the rest of the night. The artwork in this quiet tale of good deeds rewarded uses woodblock-printing techniques, soft flat colors, and occasional bits of red. Illustrations are positioned on the white space to move the tale along and underscore the bonds of friendship and loyalty. Zookeeper Amos McGee always makes time to visit his good friends at work: he plays chess with the elephant, runs races with the tortoise (who always wins), sits quietly with the penguin, lends a handkerchief to the rhinoceros (who has a runny nose), and reads stories to the owl (who is afraid of the dark). Then, after Amos gets a cold, his friends miss him, and they leave the zoo and ride the bus to his place to care for him and cheer him up. Like the story, the quiet pictures, rendered in pencil and woodblock color prints, are both tender and hilarious. Each scene captures the drama of Amos and the creatures caring for each other, whether the elephant is contemplating his chess moves, his huge behind perched on a stool; or the rhinoceros is lending Amos a handkerchief; or the owl is reading them all a bedtime story. The extension of the familiar pet-bonding theme will have great appeal, especially in the final images of the wild creatures snuggled up with Amos in his cozy home. One heckuva visual debut

Sometimes children's book reviewers bandy about the term "classic" like it was a verbal shuttlecock. There's nothing that raises the savvy readers' eyebrows faster than to see some wordsmith drooling profusely over "a new classic" or a book merely "destined to become a classic". Even worse is when they start calling a book "old-fashioned". Nine times out of then what they're talking about is the fact that the book parrots some picture book title of the past. That's the crazy thing about A Sick Day for Amos McGee. It doesn't parrot anyone, and when you read it you feel like you've know the book your whole life. Could have been written last year, ten years ago, or fifty. Doesn't matter because the word "timeless" may as well be stamped all over each and every doggone page. If you want to give a child a book that will remain with them always (and lead to decades of folks growing up and desperately trying to relocate it with the children's librarians of the future) this is the one that you want. Marvelous.

Each morning it's the same. Amos McGee gets out of bed, puts on his uniform, and goes to his job as zookeeper in the City Zoo. Amos takes his job very seriously. He always makes sure to play chess with the elephant, run races with the tortoise, sit quietly with the penguin, blow the rhino's runny nose, and tell stories to the owl at dusk. Then one day Amos wakes up sick and has to stay in bed. The animals, bereft of his presence, decide something must be done. So they pick themselves up and take the bus to Amos's house to keep him company for a change. And after everyone helps him out, Amos reads them all a story and each one of them tucks in for the night.

It's strange to think that author Philip Stead wrote both this and last year's Creamed Tuna Fish and Peas on Toast. Not that the latter was a bad book or anything, mind you, but that was a case where the protagonist had to be a perpetual crankypants. The character of Amos simply couldn't be more different. He's like a cross between your favorite grandpa and Mr. Rogers. I read through this book several times to get down the cadence of Mr. Stead's wordplay too. He's prone to terms like "amble". He parallels Amos's activities in the first half with similar activities with the animals are taking care of him in the second. He knows when to leave sections wordless. And at the end, the "goodnight" section sort of makes this an ideal bedtime book for small fry. Practically invokes Goodnight Moon it does.

There's definitely a Sebastian Meschenmoser quality to this book (a statement that is going to be understood by approximately three people out there). Meschenmoser is a German illustrator who has written titles like Learning to Fly and Waiting for Winter. Erin Stead's style is similar partly because there is a common humanity to every animal she draws. It's not just the anthropomorphic details, like a penguin in socks (an animal Meschenmoser shares an affection for). It's deeper than that. Look at this cover and then stare deep into that elephant's eyes. There are layers to that elephant. That elephant has seen things in its day and has come out the wiser for it. It could tell you stories that would curl your hair or make you laugh till it hurt. That's what I see when I look at a Stead animal. I see a creature that has had a rich full life, and all because of how she has chosen to put pencil/woodblock to paper. Amos McGee himself could not be any better. You love him from the moment he stretches in his pajamas. Everyone here, from the owl to the tortoise is someone you believe in.

Add onto all that the little tiny details as well. How Amos and the penguin sit and stand together, ankles turned inward. The fate of the penguin's red balloon. Where Mr. McGee's teddy bear is at any given time. The portrait of the penguin in the home. The rabbit reading a newspaper on the bus. And then there's the penultimate spread where the animals gather around Amos as he gets ready to go to bed. His left foot rest gently against the rhino's nose, his left hand on the elephant's trunk. Very simple, natural, affectionate touches. You notice them, but you don't. That's the charm.

So there's the content. Now look at the actual art and design. According to the bookflap, Erin creates her illustrations by hand using woodblock printing techniques and pencil." That's impressive in and of itself, but I think the use of color is fascinating. Ms. Stead is sparing. On the one hand, you're never able to identify the book's exact year. On the other, you know in the back of your brain that if the publisher wanted to use all the colors of the rainbow, they could. You could also read the book several times before you noticed the elaborate flower design that ties the horizon in place behind the runny nosed rhino. Little touches, but necessary.

Husband and wife author/illustrator teams emerge once in a while, but they don't always have the golden touch. That the Steads not only have it but are also willing to use it as a force for good instead of evil is gratifying. It's also gratifying to think that maybe we'll see them do more books in the future. I'd like that. I'd like that very much, and I'm wagering that a whole generation of children reading and loving this book are going to like it as well. Here, I'll make it simple for you: Need to buy a picture book for a kid between the ages of four and eight? Buy this one. There you go. Problem solved.

A possible Caldecott contender?

Philip C. Stead's charming story about a zookeeper and his animal companions is matched beautifully with the elegant pencil drawings and woodblock printings by his wife, Erin. E. Stead. From the very start the reader is drawn in by a warm two-page spread that depicts Amos' bedroom. The action that moves the viewer's eye towards the right- Amos stretching as his day begins and his armoire opened invitingly- is complemented by a series of strong vertical lines. There are the wide yellow stripes of the wallpaper and the thin green stripes on his pajamas. The effect is a sense of being enveloped, or better yet, being hugged. It is a feeling appropriate in a story about mutual affection, genuine kindness, and true friendship.

Amos McGee is an older gentleman (in the truest sense of the term) who lives in a little house sandwiched between two high-rise apartment buildings (a nod to Virginia Lee Burton's The Little House, I presume). Each morning after a bit of oatmeal and tea, Amos heads out in a fresh-pressed uniform to begin his workday at the City Zoo. It is clear from the first glimpse that this zoo is atypical: outside the gate, sitting high in a branch of a tree on the sidewalk, sits a monkey as comfortable as can be; inside the gate we can see a giraffe frolicking on the wide lawn. It doesn't appear that these animals reside in the usual enclosures. Indeed, the animals seem to enjoy a life more akin to a fancy retirement community. We discover that Amos spends his days playing chess with the elephant, running races with the tortoise, sitting quietly with the shy penguin, soothing the rhino's runny nose, and reading bedtime tales to the owl. It only makes sense that when Amos comes down with a bad cold and cannot make it to work, his animal friends hop on the bus and take care of him in the same gentle, loving way.

Besides the artfully understated beauty of the story and the characters, A Sick Day for Amos McGee stands out from almost all other picture books I've seen this year for the absolute genius in its visual storytelling. Erin E. Stead does not merely illustrate. She breathes life into an already delightful story while adding many more layers of expression.
Stead's attention to the smallest details is what allows the reader/viewer to experience this book many times over and still discover surprises each time: from the miniature bus stop for the mouse to the tie-wearing bird; from the sweet absurdity of Amos' bunny slippers to the depiction of a penguin donning floaties. Even Stead's use of woodblock printing to add texture and a bit of color is thoughtful and well-used. It is apparent throughout the work that each pencil line, each color choice, each wrinkle in Amos' face or in the folds of the tortoises' knees, was deliberate and made with a careful eye and a loving hand. Stead has achieved elegance with an organic heart. There is nothing stuffy or too-precise about her lines. Rather, her remarkable drawing skills clearly allow her to bring an incredible warmth and individual personality to each character. The slightly retro feel of Amos' surroundings (his antique stove and pocket watch, the 1950's-esque bus, the lack of any modern technology) combined with the use of white space give the book a pleasant stillness and leisureliness.

Some books come into existence and it seems as if they have (or should have) always existed. They possess something timeless and fundamental. Perhaps they float in that creative ether, just waiting for the perfect author and artist to bring them to life. A Sick Day for Amos McGee is just such a book.

So glad to have found this book!

Our librarian threw this new book in with our requested items because she thought we would enjoy it. Boy, was she right! Sweet, sweet story with unique and fascinating illustrations. I couldn't get enough of the pictures. I've already looked to see if Stead illustrated other books, but....sadly...no.

I highly recommend this book for toddlers and preschoolers. LOVE IT!
