The best concise introduction to object-oriented technology

Note that, although the subtitle for this text implies Taylor's audience is solely managers, this book is suitable for anyone looking for a concise introduction to object-oriented software technology. Simply ignore some of the negative comments in other reviews regarding this book's viability in relation to early 21st-century software development - like almost every text written for an information technology audience, parts of this book, especially some of the predictions Taylor makes in the last chapters (at least in the first edition of the text), have been outmoded by lessons learned or shifts of focus in the past decade. Simply purchase the latest edition of texts such as this, especially if you are new to the topic - just remember that the new edition will undoubtedly be outmoded again in the future, but by that time you will probably have a handle on the topic and not need to refer back (at least very often) to an introductory text. What I like best about this text are the following: its conciseness (less than 150 pages) and compactness, its readability (very simple language - it is not written to impress by use of an extensive vocabulary), and its diagrams. As an individual who enjoys proper use of effective visual communication when technical topics are addressed, the simple diagrams are excellent - his use of the living cell as a model in understanding object basics like data and methods is ingenious, in my opinion. No code in this text, you say? If one is looking for an introductory OO text, why would he/she need code? Use of code would not only defeat the purpose of this text, but outmode it as soon as the next language of the day/week/month/year comes into fashion.

OK, but limited. There are better alternatives

If you are new to OO and want to learn, this isn't a bad place to start. It is an exceptionally well laid-out book, very useful for reference, and covers the basics of OO in clear language. It is a very useful aid to demystifying OO jargon. But it does make it all sound too easy and ignores or understates the practical difficulties of OO development.
A major theme of this book is that OO, used correctly, will create adaptable systems. (Interestingly, Dr Taylor admits that OO hasn't fulfilled its early promises of more rapid system development.) Some superficial analogies of Objects with cellular organisms are made to this point, but Dr Taylor offers no hard real-world evidence for his claims. This is a major fault with the book as a whole. I was surprised by someone with a PhD would make so many assertions with so little hard evidence.
One such assertion is "legacy integration is easy", proposing the solution of "wrapping" to deal with legacy systems. Anyone with practical experience will know this is hopelessly simplistic. If you have a million lines of ancient COBOL and you need to change the internal logic of the newly wrapped "object", you've still got the same problem as before.
The section on Object Databases is another case in point. Again, the basics were well communicated but the with little consideration of their downside, or how successful RDMS's (and more recently hybrid DBs) have been in recent years. IT departments will be very reluctant to scrap RDMS's and replace them with object DBs after spending years getting RDMSs to work well, and give users query tools they can use effectively. I'd need a lot of convincing, with hard, objective evidence, before using an Object DB rather than tried and tested RDMS on an industrial-strength project. (The author was employed by Gemstone - is his view completely objective?)
The problems, limits and costs of OO development are barely touched upon. For a balanced view, I would strongly recommend reading Alistair Cockburn's excellent "Surviving Object-Oriented Projects" as an antidote to the more fanciful claims made in this book. Or as an alternative introduction to OO, plus a lot more, I would recommend Mielir Page-Jones's "Fundamentals of OO Design Using UML" ahead of Dr. Taylor's book.

Great when starting from zero

I was frustrated with most of the material I came across on the subject of object technology when I first began to learn about it. I had a fair amount of programming experience in so-called structured techniques. When I wanted to learn about objects, everything I got hold of assumed I already knew the fundamental concepts and so either omitted any discussion entirely, or glossed over the basics and moved you right in to teaching some language. I was getting nowhere until I happened across this book.
Regardless of why you want to get a grip on object technology this book does a good job of introducing the fundamental concepts. It is not trying not to teach you a programming or modeling language, which was just the angle I needed. I'm pretty visually oriented and I found the illustrations quite helpful. The foundation I got from this this book enabled me to finally move on to more meaty things.
You don't have to be technical to deal with this book. Some of the later chapters may be more than what some people need, and the author's choice of evolution as an example of an object-oriented system may aggravate some readers.
I would recommend this book to mangers, technical writers, educators, and students as a good first book on the subject.

Clear concise and informative

In 30 pages or so the author has given a very good history of Crusades from 11th to 15th century. You don't get all the gory details of course, but probably all that's required to understand what happened. The author does go into why Crusades were necessary: Muslims were subjugating all the Middle East and into Asia. Europe was next and after some early successes by the Crusaders, they focused on the "holy land" (Jerusalem, etc.). One of surprising facts here is that Columbus went looking for a sea route to Asia because Muslims controlled the land route, and he wanted to finance his own Crusade.

See Ibn Warraq's excellent book "Why I Am Not A Muslim" or any of Ayaan Hirsi Ali's books to find out why Islam is still doing Inquisitions today, centuries after Christianity stopped. Jihad is baked into the Quran, impossible to ignore.

The Path of Bloodshed

Travel with the tired, wounded knights and simple men who had one quest in their hearts through out all Medieval Ages… to restore Holy Land to the rightful people. Every steps of each Crusade path filled with fear, terror, and bloodshed. Hard times to both sides…

Figure who is rights and who is wrong? Was it necessary? Those are the questions I have asked myself when I read the book. Though the author did an excellent job with mini history series…

Amazing !!

I gladly recommend this short book to anyone interested in the truth about The Crusades. Henry Freeman holds nothing back at all in his extremely well written book about The Crusades. It's about time that someone stopped apologizing for the Crusades and actually described them as what they truly were. They were wars fought out of necessity to save not only Christian territory but Christian lives. The anti Catholic beurocrats would like us to apologize to Muslims for the Crusades when it is Islam that should be apologizing to us for centuries of rape,murder and torture before Europe was able to rid themselves of Muslims. And now we are living in a world where another Crusades must be launched for the same reasons hundreds of years ago. I have the utmost respect for Henry Freeman and his unbelievable not only truthfulness but courage to write this fantastic short book about a time in Catholic history that we've been lied to and blind folded about for years. This is one of the greatest books I've ever read . I have studied Theology and religious history for 10 years. I don't claim to know a lot but I know enough that when a book grabs me like this from beginning to end I consider it an honor to have read it. I look forward to reading more of Mr. Freemans work . Ladies and gentlemen if you're looking for a book that will not only speak the truth about a period in Catholic Church history that we have been told to be ashamed of by political beurocrats and by a religion that was born of the sword but will make you feel proud of your faith and make you feel like you're right there in the heat of battle in Jerusalem, Constantinople or Antioch I beg you to read this fantastic work by Henry Freeman. May God bless him and give him the knowledge to keep writing. I truly feel blessed to have read this.

Content interesting, composition extremely poor.

I found the subject content of this book to be extremely interesting. Reading was difficult due to the dozens of spelling errors and typographical errors. I had to read several sentences multiple times to determine what was being said due to errors. I do not understand why an author would not care enough to proof his work.

The Philopher's Mud

I purchased this to learn more about the Philosopher's Stone and was quickly inundated with Philosopher's Mud. There were about six relevant pages, mainly quotes from others, and the rest was unedited and unproofread overheated train of thought ramblings covering dozens of related and unrelated topics referencing dozens of other authors without adequate documentation. I will be using this book mainly for the few, hopefully legitimate, references to other more articulate authors.

Yes, I know this is a borderline mystical/secret society topic, but that doesn't excuse lack of editing, lack of proofreading and lack of spell-checking. Even if the author couldn't afford an editor, there is inexpensive software available to at least make the format presentable. If I had been given this book to edit, I could have rewritten it in about six pages, and saved the readers the time of wading through the mud.

Most of my purchases are extremely alternative, but I can still manage to rate most of them a 4 or 5 stars. Sorry, this one's defects are too blatant to be overlooked.

Bad editing and just boring

I really tried to like this series. I've read, well quickly skimmed through all the books so far. I won't continue to read anymore. I really felt the story as a whole was just incredibly boring and instead of smart, courageous women we get bratty, careless teenage girls trying to rebel. The dialogue did not reflect adult conversations at all. Plus all 3 books are boring, the thing is these could really be great stories if some effort was put into it. Oh, and they are all in serious need of some quality editing. The poor editing just made the stories even worse. The potential is there for a good action packed sci fi romance but I think the author needs to write adult women into the roles not teen girls...and they're crappy teen girls at that. I've given this author 3 tries, I won't read anything from her again.
