Review
There are six publications devoted to a "review" or preparation for the PT Assistant taking a licensure examination. Tenpenny?s extensive text is the latest to be made available to the growing number of physical therapist assistants. It would appear the new publication will be very helpful in preparing the PTA for the NPTAE.
In recent correspondence with the author, he wrote, "Though my original intention was to better serve the entry-level physical therapist assistant population - the positive feedback and intangible rewards that come with being published have also been priceless." In the book?s section , "About the Author" Kevin Tenpenny is described as a PTA and Associate Professor at Kaskaskia College in Centralia, Illinois. He is a full-time faculty member for the PT Assistant and Massage Therapy programs. He earned his Associate of Applied Science Degree while serving in the US air Force from 1989 to 1996. He was recognized as the 1994 USAF Outstanding Physical Therapy Specialist of the Year.
The text is presented in four sections: 1) Exam Preparation; 2) Tests and Measurements Group 1: 102 Questions; 3) Interventions; and 4) Standards of Care. Within the sections there are 9 chapters, each with many questions (950) to challenge ones multiple-choice testing skills and improve clinical reasoning. A CD ROM is included with the book which includes three full length, 150 item, practice exams which give users the feel of taking the actual exam.
The appendix includes four table (Muscles of Facial Expression, Muscles of Mastication and Muscles that Move the Eyes, The Cranial Nerves and Disorders of Joints) in additional to anatomical illustrations and suggested readings.

Fair book
By Eileen Small
Several typographical errors in the book, some within the answer key. OK book to use if still in school and you have access to your teachers to double check anything that is very off base. Fair book to supplement other resources when studying for the PTA exam if you have the extra cash and time to spare.

did not meet expectations
By Jon Berrywigg
The physical therapy assistant exam review book is outdated to say the least. The cd for the tests is not compatible with windows 7. I contacted customer service they were rude and unhelpful they told "tough luck" when I inquired about the cd. The information in the book is lacking correctness throughout. The cd is just as bad when it comes to reliable source of information. I learned this only after I was forced to go to the public library to run the cd to take the tests. Just like the book the information on the cd is outdated and could have used an editor for starters. On the test some answers are completely wrong and others are wrong but in the rationale explain on how another choice is correct that contradicts their "correct" answer. Overall it is a poor book and I would recommend the PTA exam review and study guide.
-good luck

Ouch!
By Ashley Craft
If you want your brain to bleed or just up for a challenge when you are preparing for your boards, you should buy this book. It is very nice to have the CD for the practice exams. They are humbling questions. Unless your curriculum required you to have all physical therapy books in print, it is hard to get the material/literature to look up all the answers' rationales. I would still buy it especially if you plan on sharing it with a study group because it gives you very different and creative ways of asking fundamental topics than other exam review books. In summary, its not my first choice for reviewing for the boards but it is definitely in the top 5. (Fyi, several questions were worded like this exam review on the boards and yes I did pass it the first try.)
