About the Author
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthal was born in 1875 in London, to an Anglican clergyman, and spent his formative years in rural Suffolk. He was contemporary of Winston Churchill at Harrow, the famous private school. During intervals from living a sedentary life in Suffolk, Pickthall travelled extensively in the Arab world and Turkey. In 1917, Pickthall reverted to Islam. A strong advocate of the Ottoman Empire, Pickthall studied the Orient, published articles and novels on the subject, best known for the English translation of the Qur'an ' The meaning of the Holy Qur'an' While under the service of the Nizam of Hyderabad. In India he became a champion of independence and a close friend of Mahatma Gandhi and served as editor of the Bombay Chronicle, served as an Imam

An author that deserves to be rediscovered

Pickthalls' best work in my opinion (besides the quran translation). I am a Muslim and the only work I've been familiar with is his Quranic translation. I did not know the man. Moreover, I didn't know he was an esteemed novelist in his time. Pickthall penetrates difficult subjects with his compact, poetic prose. He is a master of setting and he uses this to craft the last embers of the dying Ottoman era in this novel of love, hardship, betrayal and death. It is a novel to bring one to tears and the lessons contained therein - the steadiness of the Muslim soul and its acceptance of destiny, the profound contentment found in the everyday and also in the horrific, the leaving of an uncertain fate to the hands of God - are relevant in such a whirlwind of an era.

Read this book. Read it because it will give you an insight into people you would think could not exist.

Surprisingly Good!

Excellent book. Most people know Pickthall from his excellent and popular translation of the Holy Quran. But this novel was a great find for me. Loved reading about an excellent character and how chaotic things were as the Ottoman Empire was falling and a new republic was being formed.

Great novel by a great author!

I love how the main character is portrayed as an Ottoman of the old age in the early stages of the new world.

The story journeys through piety, chivalry, love, comradeship, heroism, tragedy and faith.

The imagery and the intrinsic details of the Ottoman culture during the empire's final stages are excellent.

The Best Undergraduate Textbook I've Seen for Genetics

I've just completed my first semester teaching Genetics at a small liberal arts college in Indiana. Because I was jumping into the position I was stuck using the text previously designed for the class. Almost a third of the book was classical genetics, which I enjoy, but was certainly overplayed. Molecular Biology areas were a jumble of terms to learn and lists to inscribe into their brains. The problems in the book did not reflect the material in the text, leaving the class pretty much upset with the book. By midterm it was time to find another sources for the class.
I found myself reaching for other texts, and "Genetics, Analysis and Principles" turned out to be the jewel. It is well balanced, very clearly written, and does not spend its time making students read long memory lists of genes or proteins that the class is going to forget less than two weeks after the term. I think this is largely reflected by the way he wrote the book; with input from students.
Reading the intro I was afraid that this text was going to be way over into the experimental design/ data side which I've seen in other texts mean "no content". Not so this text; experimental design has been written into the book to describe genetics and content, not replace it. I think what is truely unique about this book is the use of scientific process as a way to teach concepts. I wish I had more books like this one for other courses. I hope Dr. Brooker's format for Biology (and yes other science courses) is adopted for other courses.
If you are considering a text for your Genetics classes, I think you will be very pleased with this book.

Excellent text for self-directed learning

I used this textbook in a distance learning course and have found it to be invaluable to my learnng experience.
For anyone who has taken Genetics, you'll account for the fact that it is not an easy course. Taking it without a professor present is even more challenging. Luckily this text is well written and easy to follow. The author uses a mix of theory and experiment examples to drive important concepts home. The language is not dry like in many Biology texts. Instead, it is easy to read, almost to the point of being enjoyable.
There are a few things I really liked:
1. The illustrations in this book are paramount to learning difficult concepts. When explaining experimental procedures, the text is accompanied by step-by-step instuctions and illustrations as to how the experiment was carried out. This proved helpful in visualizing the procedure.
2. Each chapter is well organized and easy to understand. The author speaks in easy to understand terms (that is if you have had previous Biology courses.) His writing style is dynamic and never boring.
3. Difficult concepts are often explained more than once. Sometimes the book gets a little ahead of itself, but page numbers and chapters are always given so you can read about things you don't understand.
4. The end of each chapter provides the reader with provocative critical thinking questions that solidify important points from the chapter. Best of all, even numbered answers are given in the back so you can check yourself without hunting through the book.
Overall I'd give this book an A and it will remain in my collection of Biology texts.

Sudent Friendly; Sometimes Wordy but Easy to Understand

This book explains genetics concepts in a clear manner. It is was described to me as both teacher friendly and student friendly. I can easily see how it could indeed be both, though I can only comment on it from a teacher p.o.v. It is the book I've chosen to prepare my class from, and I would highly recommend it for any Genetics class.

This is one of the best books I've read in years. Anyone who has not yet experienced "no-mind" (alertness without thinking) is not living well. Unequivocally the best shifter novel I have ever read

This is hands down the best shifter novel I have ever read, bar none.
I was a little nervous typing that, when I think back on the amazing stories I've read. But there's no way I can't say it.
TJ Klune so expertly breaks your heart, makes you feel so much for his characters. I've been on a bit of a shifter binge lately, when I saw this was coming out only a few days ago. Honestly, I think I am going to have to take a break from shifters, because there is NO WAY I will find anything as satisfying. The world building, the characters (not just a handful, but complex, diverse characters, a whole pack of them), the writing, the emotion. Ox and Joe have me completely in love. I love the fact that you can see the characters learning and growing, and building their family. I thought I loved TJ Klune after BOATK, but wow. I just KNOW I will be fangirling hardout for the next few months. I don't have a book blog, but you can bet your bum I'll be recommending and sharing this with anyone who will listen.

An epic, moving, and suspenseful tale.

This is one of the better "werewolf" books I've read in a while. It's an epic tale spanning over a decade, engaging the readers with well-developed and compelling characters and thoughtful and heart-tugging prose.

The book, while romantic, is not a typical romance. It spans a length of time surpassing a decade as the two main characters, one of which is a child when they met, develop and reconcile their feelings for each other and their duties to their pack. Ox is human, but not "just" human. Being drawn into their pack, he can feel the ties to each member as they start to develop. As time progresses, his role in the pack changes, and though he was taught by his absentee father that he's nothing special, he gradually discovers he's much more than he had thought and is everything his new family/pack believes him to be.

The shifter world is examined in a new light. Gone are the Omegas who are submissive and empathetic. Here, they are the rogue wolves who have given into their basest instincts. Here, they are the monsters. Witches are men or women who have magical abilities, and packs sometimes include one. Like the wolves, witches can lose touch with their humanity as magic can bring you to dark places. Ties in a pack are felt amongst its members as near-physical strings linking them all together, and Ox can feel these developing, sometimes being surprised when new people who are close to the pack are recognized to suddenly belong to the pack.

There's humor, heartache, love, danger, suspense, and thoughtful prose. The characters live and breath, and the words pull at your heart at times. It's a long book, and it moves at a steady pace, always engaging the reader and pulling them into this fantastical world. If you're a fan of shifter stories, and want something that's more than just a run-of-the-mill shifter romance, get this book. For that matter, if you have any interest in fantasy at all, get this book. It's one of my favorites.

GIVE A TRY EVEN IF U DO NOT LIKE SHIFTER TALES- U MIGHT CHANGE YOUR MIND ON THIS ONE

Admittedly , I am a Klune addicted reader. His writing continues to develop with surprising results. There still exists amusing humor in his work but now
tackling different genres with relish. Frankly, I am not a fan of shifting novels or wolf packs. I usually shy away. However, being Klune I was curious.
Believe me I was not disappointed with the choice.

Basically, the story is about an outcast taken in a by a wolf pack. Really, though, it's more than this. Despite the fantasy it has elements that touch the human condition of belonging, living with one's demons, bonding and above all love. I am amazed how Klune can take a story and connect emotionally with one's humanity.

Yeah, I certainly like this one. Also, I noticed Klune did keep his word about the sequel to Withered +Sere coming in August. Kudos to you TJ .
