Me and a bunch of my friends sat outside and laughed at this book. We would answer the questions and see how we compared. We learned alot about each other and had a great time. We would get funny looks we were laughing so hard but hey we had a great time with this one. It is a good book and recommended as a party book. Don't worry too much if your answers don't match the books though, some of mine didn't.

Too much of the wrong things, not enough of the right ones

I have about 5 years of .NET programming experience, limited to .NET 1.1 and 2.0. I bought this book thinking it would be a good "quick hit" to learn, in overview form, about all the new technologies introduced in the two latest revs of .NET; not looking for in-depth coverage of any one subject, just enough to give me my bearings and get me started.

One thing that emerges clearly from reading the book is, this was in fact the authors' intent. In the very first chapter, it says "Our goal is to show you the 25% that you will use 85% of the time... this may well be the only book you need to consult about those parts of .NET that are not central to your business."

And indeed, the first chapter or two do provide a good description of the .NET 3.5 landscape: basically, there are a specific set of about 10 technologies that make up the bulk of what's new: XAML (a new form of UI markup that underlies WPF and Silverlight), Microsoft's take on AJAX, LINQ, WCF, Workflow Foundation and Cardspace.

From there, the book moves into a more specific treatment of each technology, and this is where it really wanders off into the woods, never to return. There is one principal reason for this: using examples the wrong way. Example is the book's central, if not only, teaching method, to the exclusion of necessary conceptual introduction, background, advance organization, and (often) even explanation of the examples themselves.

For instance, let's consider one major new concept-- the "lambda expression" from the chapter on LINQ. The example is shown ("customer => customer.FirstName == 'Donna'"), and then here is the explanation, in its entirety: "The lefthand operand, 'customer', is the input parameter, and the righthand operand is the lambda expression. In this case, it checks whether the customer's FirstName is 'Donna'."

I had to go on-line to learn that a lambda expression is a new, compact way of creating a delegate for an anonymous method, and that these delegates are a major element in the LINQ extension methods, whose parameters generally take the form of "Func(T, TResult)". (I also learned the meaning of "delegate", "anonymous method", and "Func(T, TResult)" from material on-line; to its credit, the book did go into some detail on what "extension methods" are.)

This mode of presentation was very typical-- leading off with an illustration in a vacuum, then following up with an insultingly oversimplified explanation. The section on AJAX was probably the worst.

As for an treatment of anything NOT specifically called for in the examples, forget it. I think the authors must be assuming that, in each case, their example (usually a two-screen application) will actually represent a direct analog to 85% of all usage for the new concept, and that nothing further is needed. Speaking for myself personally, I did not find that to be the case. I would have liked more explanation and less "Hello World".

As a very poorly fleshed-out framework, this book had some value. As I went through it, I at least got enough exposure to know which concepts I would need to understand in order to begin working with .NET 3.5. However, I had hoped for a book that would then go on to actually provide me with such an understanding. In that respect, this book was a major disappointment.

Excellent resource for .NET 3.5!

I just finished reading Programming .NET 3.5 from O'Reilly. The book, published in August, is an overview of the latest .NET Framework revision. You'll get an introduction to the topics that have been introduced along the way that include technology from .NET 2.0, .NET 3.0, and the latest version; .NET 3.5. Also included are libraries such as ASP.NET MVC and Silverlight.

You can easily pick up this book and enjoy the introductions to technologies such as Windows Communication Foundation, Windows Workflow Foundation, Windows Presentation Foundation, ASP.NET MVC, and Silverlight. Each of these topics are presented in a way that will be familiar to .NET developers. New developers, without experience in .NET, will be able to take a lot away from this book. It certainly will do more for the developer who already has a .NET background, no matter how brief it is.

That said, if you only pick up the book for the introduction to each technology, you'll be missing the best that this book has to offer. Unlike most technology books these days, this book explains the topics within the context of best practices and real world scenarios. For example, prior versions of ASP.NET did not promote decoupled architectures. In fact, it made it difficult to achieve them. With the technology available in .NET 3.5, modeling and implementing proper architectures is encouraged and facilitated by the framework. This book will show you how that works in .NET 3.5 and introduce you to the technologies at the same time.

I highly recommend this book. It will be on my desk for easy reference for my .NET projects in the future.

A tour of .NET 3.5

This book is very different than most of the book I have purchased on .NET because it covers XAML, Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF), Silverlight, Ajax, Windows Communication Foundation (WCF), Workflow Foundation (WF), CardSpace, as well as the industry standard patterns Microsoft has incorporated in these technologies.

None of the technologies are gone into in great depth, and I thought I would be slamming them for that, but I can't because they tell us upfront they don't do that. I also can't do that because they did a great job of making this a roller coaster ride through the .NET 3.5 Framework. Meaning they point out some really cool stuff in one part of it, and then speed off to another part of it to show off the cool stuff there.

I would suggest you have somewhat of a background with .NET 3.5. You don't have to, but it helped me because I could easily place the book's topics into the proper context.

The authors do a good job introducing some of the key patterns found in the .NET Framework. It is the same as the rest of the book, they look at one cool view of the pattern and then speed off to the next one.

The code samples shown in the book are available on line, and they are well organized and very usable.

All in all I have enjoyed reading the book. I would recommend this book to anyone who has been trying to get a grip on all the different features in .NET 3.5. They will get a cool glimpse into each area.

For victims of narcissistic abuse, an inside-out approach is required. The four forces of a relationship - love, power, hate and shame - are explained, where balancing them in daily life is a fundamental requirement to ensure healthy relationships and inoculation from narcissism.

Finally, 7 paradigm shifts are introduced which aim to free us from the illusion of power which the narcissist regime cultivates:

1. Split to ambivalence: Learn to have both love and hate for a person and to see them as they really are.
2. Worship to personal power: Dispel the belief that salvation lies in a ‘perfect’ person and take responsibility for your life.
3. Enmeshment to individuality: Learn how narcissists use enmeshment to control and embrace a life of healthy boundaries.
4. Fight/flight to wholeness: Cultivate a state of calm after a lifetime of anxiety from PTSD, which develops from narcissistic abuse.

5. Control to influence: Use personal power to set an example and give up the need to control others.

6. Clinging to falling: Give up the idea that playing a role will give your life meaning. Learn to embrace nothingness, and with that your personal power.

7. Doing to being: Embrace the power of shame as an alternative to narcissism.

The medieval epoch in Jewish history begins around the year 315, when the emperor Constantine began enacting disabling laws against the Jews, rendering them second-class citizens. In the centuries following, Jews enjoyed (or suffered under) legislation, either chosen or forced by the state, which differed from the laws for the Christian and Muslim masses. Most states saw the Jews as simply a tolerated group, even when given favorable privileges. The masses often disliked them. Medieval Jewish history presents a picture wherein large patches are characterized by political and social disabilities. Marcus closes the medieval Jewish age (for Western Jewry) in 1791 with the proclamation of political and civil emancipation in France.

The 137 sources included in the anthology include historical narratives, codes, legal opinions, martyrologies, memoirs, polemics, epitaphs, advertisements, folk-tales, ethical and pedagogical writings, book prefaces and colophons, commentaries, and communal statutes. These documents are organized in three sections: The first treats the relation of the State to the Jew and reflects the civil and political status of the Jew in the medieval setting. The second deals with the profound influence exerted by the Catholic and Protestant churches on Jewish life and well-being. The final section presents a study of the Jew “at home,” with four sub-divisions with treat the life of the medieval Jew in its various aspects. "The Jew in the Medieval World" is unique for its sweeping view of Jewish historical experience from late antiquity until modern times, with introductions and annotations that make those sources accessible to the general reader. For this new edition, Marc Saperstein has updated Marcus's ninety-six bibliographies, providing references to the most recent scholarly research on each topic. In his cogent introduction, Saperstein analyzes and evaluates Marcus's decision regarding periodization, organization, and inclusion. In so doing, he offers valuable insights about the implications of those decisions for our own understanding of Jewish history.

This amazing book has 96 primary sources - excerpts from books and essays by and about pre-emancipation Jews, discussing topics as varied as Christian and Muslim oppression of Jews, Jewish religious law, Jewish false messiahs, and Jewish education.

Some of the more interesting things I learned:

*That Christian oppression of Jews began almost as soon as Christians took over the Roman Empire. Just a few years after Constantine (Rome's first Christian emperor) took power, he issued relatively mild decrees against Jews converting or intermarrying Christians. A Jew who converted and circumcised a non-Jewish slave could be subject to capital punishment. A century later, Theodosius actually prohibited Jews from erecting new synagogues.

On the other hand, as late as the 1750s Frederick II of Prussia prohibited Jews from establishing private synagogues, and sought to regulate exactly which prayers Jews could engage in.

*Just as Jews sought to distance themselves from Christians, Christians did the same. A 300 Spanish church council prohibited Christians from eating with Jews. And in 325, the Council of Nicaea changed the date of Easter to ensure that Easter's dating was not dependent on the dating of the Jewish Passover. (Some early Christian communities, by contrast, celebrated Easter on the first night of Passover).

*The sheer diversity of Jewish customs over the centuries. Some Jews today think that the most distinctively dressed groups (such as the Hasidim) are the most "traditional" or "authentic" Jews. But a 1748 essay describing Shearith Israel (a still-prospering New York synagogue) writes that "Both men and women were dressed entirely in the English fashion; the former had all of them their hats on." (I visited Shearith Israel a few years ago, and today, hats are still more popular than in other shuls!) . Another essay describes Shabbat dinner in Alexandria, Egypt in the 15th century: Jews drank cups of wine, alternating with fruit, and did not start eating meat, etc. until they had drained six or seven cups!

*In the past as today, Jews struggled with observance, especially while traveling. From a 1748 description of New York Jews: "They commonly eat no pork; yet I have been told by several men of credit, that many of them (especially among the young Jews) when traveling, did not make the least difficulty about eating this, or any other meat that was put before them..."

*The amount of internal self-government in some Jewish communities. In 1637, the Jewish leadership of Lithuania held that in order to prevent Jews from overspending on marriages and other festive occasions, a local rabbi should "consider the number of guests which it is suitable for every individual, in view of his wealth and the occasion, to invite to a festive meal."

*The backwardness of a few Jewish communities. For example, the memoirs of Solomon Maimon describes his elementary school in Mirz, Poland as follows: "[His teacher] was the terror of all young people, `the scourge of God'; he treated those in his charge with unheard of cruelty, flogged them till the blood came, even for the slightest offense ... When the parents of these unfortunates came to him, and took him to task, he struck them with stones and whatever else came to hand, and drove them with his stick out of the house . . . All under his discipline became either blockheads or good scholars." Of course, the book contains an ample selection of essays about Jewish leaders who ensured that better contains prevailed.

In 1989, Malcolm McLaren had his only number one hit with a single called “Deep in Vogue.” Early the next year, Madonna had one of the biggest hits of her career, with the single “Vogue,” and when Jennie Livingston's film Paris Is Burning arrived in cinemas the same year, winning the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival, the mainstream got hip to New York City's extraordinary ball culture, from which the film and McLaren and Madonna's songs had arisen. Paris Is Burning documented a gay ballroom scene that emerged in Harlem in the mid-1980s, which drew African American and Latino gay and transgender communities to compete against one another for their dancing skills, the verisimilitude of their drag and their ability to walk on the runway. Photographer Chantal Regnault spent many years recording this scene, from which the dance style known as voguing arose. A visual riot of fashion, polysexuality and subversive style, Voguing and the Gay Balls of New York City is also an extraordinary document on sexuality and race. The wild years of voguing are vividly captured in Regnault's hundreds of amazing, previously unpublished photographs. The book also features interviews with key figures from the movement, essays, flyers and ephemera.
Photographer and documentarist Chantal Regnault was born in France. She left Paris after the 1968 uprisings to live in New York, where she lived for the next 15 years. At the end of the 1980s she became immersed in Harlem's voguing scene. Also around this time, Regnault developed an interest in Haitian voodoo culture and began to divide her time between Haiti and New York. Her widely published photographs have appeared in major magazines and newspapers, including Vanity Fair and The New York Times.

To Be Real

Although I love Chantal Regnault's photographs from 1989-92 that record and report on the New York City underground ball world, this is
a strangely random undertaking. Missing are images of the real `legends` turning it, the hallmark of the runway, and the interviews are so inaccurate that there obviously was no real editor involved in the project. Right out of the gate Hector Xtravaganza states that `Carmen is the Mother now since Angie died`. Danni was our Mother after Angie died. Following his death Raquel became the Mother, followed by Giselle. I would hate for anyone doing research on the ball scene to use this sort of information as truth. It isn`t. There are so many of us old schoolers around for fact checking. I`m sorry to see this kind of data recorded as fact.

I love this book. It's definitely accurate and informative to readers. The work put into this book was outstanding. The photos are exquisite. The photographer has the perfect eye. The interviews are extremely interesting. It's a MUST BUY.
